Natalia Maas

Projects Support Manager

Natalia joined Tate in April 2014.

How long have you worked in the sector?

Eleven years. I really didn’t think when I accepted the position that I would still be here after all this time! I applied for it mainly because it was local and fitted around family life.

At the time, I didn’t have much experience but I was determined to prove myself. With the support of my colleagues, I’ve been able to learn new skills and grow as a professional.

Can you tell us a bit about what you do and what a typical day looks like at Tate?

I work up the information, documentation and literature that Tate provides to clients in support of projects. I also liaise directly with clients once a project is underway to answer any queries.

For example, I’m responsible for preparing the technical information at the design stage. Then, once an installation is underway, I prepare documentation around areas such as quality sign-offs, site progress reports, and certifications. Once the project has been completed, I work-up the operations and maintenance manuals for end-users.

If a client comes back during the project with additional queries, say around the carbon footprint of a panel, its point loading, or acoustic properties, then I liaise with the relevant teams and pass on the information and any supporting evidence.

What do you like about your role?

I enjoy working alongside a great team of directors, contracts mangers, and quantity surveyors, to provide support on variety of projects; I believe that my work contributes to the successful completion of the projects.

I’m still surprised by the amount of documentation which is required to successfully deliver a project, covering technical, environmental, health & safety, and quality standards.

Our main contractors also use a variety of platforms for information and data management so you never stop learning – and it keeps you on your toes! I really like feeling valued by colleagues. It’s very motivating and makes me want to perform better and contribute more to the team.

How do you help customers?

By providing very timely technical information and a high standard of documentation and literature in support of projects!

And it’s lovely when your work is appreciated by clients. One email I received recently said: ‘…thank you for the very comprehensive information we have already received, not many come back at such a high standard.’ This was from an ISG senior planner on receipt of their operations and maintenance manual.

What’s next?

I am looking forward to gaining more experience and expanding my skill set. This includes rolling out our new software platform “Insite for H&S & Quality Management” to support our project management.

I’m also going to be providing training and on-going support to other members of the Tate team, which is a new challenge that I’m looking forward to tackling!

Thanks Natalia!

Charlie Mann

Tate Specification Executive

Charlie joined Tate in May 2024.

Why did you decide to work in construction?

A family member was already working for a ceiling manufacturer. I liked the fact that construction’s a booming industry with lots of career opportunities so I decided to apply for a job at the same company and was successful.

How long have you worked in the sector?

I’ve worked in the building sector for nearly six years.

Can you tell us a bit about what you do and what a typical day looks like at Tate?

No two days are the same. I’m involved in specifying our raised access floors for large commercial projects. I work closely with architects and clients to understand their project specific requirements and assist with developing the suitable flooring solution.

I am often out of the office doing presentations, CPDs, and networking. A large part of the job is also project tracking which means that we identify projects that are at early design stage and we contact the architects to ask if we can assist with specifying suitable raised access floors.

What do you like about your role?

Our team works on projects at design stage, so typically many years ahead of a building actually breaking ground.

I really enjoy going on-site some years later to see the project I’ve worked on right in front of me!

I also like the fact that we’re the UK’s leading specialists in raised access floors. We offer customers high quality products and access to the huge depth of knowledge, support and expertise within the Tate technical team. Some of the team have been working in the industry for decades and I count myself very lucky to work with them; they have definitely helped me broaden my knowledge.

We recently rebranded from Kingspan Data & Flooring to Tate and every architect that I’ve spoken to has embraced the change. They like the fact that being part of the Tate business means we can expand our product portfolio - for example, we’ve just launched a new reuse panel, which has attracted a lot of interest.

We’re also getting requests from the architects to join our reuse team on-site so that they can understand the rigours of our inspection process to identify panels from other buildings that might be suited to be reused within or elsewhere. When I can, I like to go along too, to help put faces to names and cement our relationships.

How do you help customers?

In summary, some types of discussions I have within my role include:

  • the weight of equipment planned to be used within a specific area to make sure the floors ‘grade’ is appropriate for their project
  • any floor finishes that will compliment a Tate raised access floor
  • the specific project sustainability targets - including how using our low embodied carbon or reused panels could assist with that goal

Floor finishes are the surface materials that are placed on top of a raised access floor panels. They include our magnet-backed timber Attiro range, which creates stunning finishes and easy accessibility to services running below the floor. In terms of sustainability, the main concern is the product’s embodied carbon content and how this contributes to the final building’s carbon footprint/sustainability rating.

I’m not a classic ‘salesperson’; I’m here to give technical advice and it’s really rewarding when architects and clients come back to you later and say, “you did a really good job there, can you help me with….?”

What’s Next?

I’m going to continue to work my way up the career ladder. I’m an ambitious individual and am learning a lot working with my colleagues at Tate; I really look forward to continuing on that journey.

Thanks Charlie!
